Tyra Lynne Banks was born on December 4, 1973 in Inglewood, California. She graduated from Immaculate Heart High School at age seventeen and was then accepted to Layola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Instead of pursuing a veterinary career, she decided to try and pursue her modeling career instead. Since then, she has become the most successful, richest, African American, supermodel of all time. Tyra encountered many rejections when she first started trying to make her dreams come true
She was only seventeen and felt that she had endured too many rejections and decided to go to college instead. Little did she know, veterinary school was not her calling. She was walking down the street two weeks before classes started when a model scout from France spotted her. He offered her immediate work for the upcoming fall haute couture shows in Paris and she accepted. At age seventeen she flew to Paris, France and became homesick. Her mother, Carolyn Banks who had divorced from Tyra’s father, Don Banks, when she was six years old, went to Paris to comfort and support her aspiring daughter in the cruel modeling world.
An example of how cruel the modeling world is, are the eating disorders that aspiring models have to deal with in order to be the size two that some modeling agencies require them to be. If their weight isn’t down then they aren’t welcome into the industry. Some models that actually do make it, also have to deal with the urge to try drugs and alcohol, but Tyra Banks didn’t let those temptations take her in. She had her mind focused on success and she didn’t let those things rear her away from her goals.
Her early days were very difficult due to racism within the industry. From the beginning, she was called “The New Naomi Campbell.” Naomi Campbell, known for her diva-like attitude and behavior had managed to get Tyra barred from appearing in a Chanel show after refusing to speak to her on several occasions. Many times Tyra felt like giving up because of the pressures of the industry but she kept pushing on.
Tyra became known for her fierce catwalk and charisma. Other designers were so entranced by her presence on the runway that she was booked for an unprecedented twenty-five shows, which was a record in the business for a newcomer. She walked down runways in Milan, London, Tokyo and New York. People magazine named her one of the 50 most beautiful women in their issue. She was then offered lucrative contract deals.
She became the first African-American woman on the cover of Sports Illustrated’s high profile swimsuit issue and Cover Girl made her the second African-American to be offered a long-term deal with them. Men’s magazine voted her one of the most beautiful women, twice and she was also the first African American that graced the covers of GQ magazine.
Tyra Banks was a hit on the runways of top designers since the early 1990’s, but her work in the commercial world was her big break. Her career moved first into television. Her television career began on the fourth season of The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, which she played lead character, Jackie Ames, as Will’s ex-girlfriend and she made eight appearances throughout the series. She also made appearances on Felicity, MadTV, Wild N Out, and the Price Is Right, guest starring as Barker’s Beauty.
She then became a television hostess, head judge, and executive producer for the hit television series, America’s Next Top Model, which debuted in 2003. In addition to that she retired in 2005 from modeling to concentrate on hosting her television show, The Tyra Banks show, whose target audience is younger women. The show premiered on September 12, 2005, drawing over 1.9 million viewers an episode.
On the big screen she had minor roles. Her first big screen role came in 1994 when she co-starred in the drama, Higher Learning, and then co-starred with Lindsey Lohan in the Disney film, Life Size. Other roles that she starred in include, Love Stinks which premiered in 1999, Coyote Ugly in 2000 and Halloween Resurrection in 2002.

In conclusion, Tyra Banks proves in more ways than one to be an important figure in the modeling industry, movies and film industry and the television industry. She’s also a very important person in people’s lives. In 1997 she received the Michael Award for Supermodel of the year. In addition, in 1997 she was chosen for the cover of Victoria’s secret catalog, making her the first African-American to be honored. Tyra is one out of only four African-American and seven women to have repeatedly ranked among the World’s most influential people by Time Magazine. Although she’s had her ups and downs and disappointments, she kept moving forward and pushed herself to be the biggest supermodel of all time.
